"Among the first to enter the precincts of Lord Murugan's sanctuary at Thiru-Avinankudi [Pazhani] are the sages [munivar முனிவர்], who are wearing the garment made of the bark of trees; the knotted-tuft-of-grey-white-hair on their heads resembles the conch-shell turning to the right; their limbs shine with flawless purity; they are draped with deer-skin as a shawl; their bodies are lean without much flesh and their chest-bones are thrusting out; they abstain from food even during the daytime for several days; their minds are free of hatred and malicious anger; they have such great knowledge, of which even the learned-persons are not aware; they provide leadership to all the other learned-persons by virtue of having attained the ultimate limit of knowledge; they have renounced lust and cruel anger; they know of no suffering whatsoever; their minds are attuned to be wise, and they bear no ill-will towards others."

The next group to enter the precincts consists of [celestial] minstrels; they are wearing flawlessly pure and thin mist-like garment; their chest is adorned with garland of blooming buds; they have wound the flawless strings of their lutes to a proper pitch so as to produce melodious music pleasant to the ears; they have kind hearts, and their speech is gentle; and, while they are playing their melodious tunes, they are following the sages ... "Then, the numerous celestial beings and eighteen gaNas ['the retinue of the Lord'] are arriving under the effulgent light of the Sun; they appear like stars in the sky; they have the ability to move swiftly like the wind; they have the prowess of fire which burns fiercely when fanned by the wind; their voice is loud like the peals of thunder followed by the flash of lightning in the sky; they have come revolving in a circle in the sky for the redress of their woes and for their traditional celestial functions to be graciously affirmed by the Lord.
