......... Meaning .........

kanaka thampaththaic checchaiyai mecchum kadaka sangaththup pon puya veRpan: "You have gorgeous mountainous shoulders that look like golden pillars, decorated with vetchi garland and by a bunch of weapons like Your celebrated and triumphant sword;

kadaluL vanjiththup pukkathu or kokkum podiyAkak kaRuvu sem saththip pathma karaththan: You have the lotus-like hand that held the reddish and powerful spear which annihilated with rage the demon SUran hiding in the sea, lurking with a treacherous motive, in the disguise of a unique mango tree;

kumaran enRu arcchiththu appadi seppum kavi mozhinthu aththaik katRu aRa utRum: Oh KumarA!" - so saying, people worship You, singing poems about Your glory, and immerse themselves in those songs with full understanding of their meaning;

puviyOr pOy kunakiyum kaikkuk kaRpakam oppenRu anakan enRu icchaip pattathu aLikkum kumaNan* enRu oppittu: Yet, the same people of this earth, out of sheer ignorance, approach (rich) persons, speaking to them in a flattering manner, comparing their hand to the (wish-yielding) kaRpaga tree and declaring that they are unblemished and that they are like the great philanthropist-king KumaNan* who fulfilled the desires of alm-seekers;

iththanai pattu ingu iravu Ana kurudu koNdu aththac chaththam anaiththum thirudiyum soRkuth thakka thoduththum: going through such miseries in their blind pursuit of begging, they steal words and meters from poems (of old texts) and compose songs to match their words;

kulaviyum kaththappatta kalakkam theLiyAthO: and then they scream in raptures (of self-importance); will such muddled intellect never become clear?

sanakan anputRup petRa madap peN thanip perum kaRpuc chakram nadaththum thakai ilangaic chutRaththai muzhuththum sudavE: As the reign of matchless chastity of SeethA, the beautiful and dear daughter of King Janakan, ruled in the famous kingdom of LankA, the kins of all demons were scorched in fire;

vem samara saNdak kotRaththu av arakkan kathir vidum paththuk koththu mudikkum thani or ampaith thottuc churar vignam kaLaivOnum: as the mighty and angry demon RAvaNan, capable of fierce warfare, was killed with his ten dazzling and crowned heads severed in a bunch by the unique arrow of Lord Rama who removed the miseries of the celestials; that Lord VishNu, along with

thinakaran sorkkaththukku iRai sukran sasitharan thikkuk kaththar akath(thi)yan thisai mukan seppappatta vasittan thiraL vEtham: the Sun, IndrA, the Lord of the celestial land, Sukran, EesAnyan who wears a crescent moon on His hair, the protectors of the (eight) cardinal directions, Sage Agasthiyar, Lord BrahmA, the famous sage Vasishtar, the whole lot of VEdAs,

sekathalam suththap paththiyar siththam seyal ozhinthu atRup petRavar matRum sivanum vanthikkak kacchiyil niRkum perumALE.: the people of this world, the devotees who have purity of mind and body, the realisors of the eternal bliss who have conquered their mind and actions and Lord SivA as well are all assembled to worship You in Kanchipuram which is Your abode, Oh Great One!
