kuRaivathu inRi mikka salam elumpu (a)thu utRa kudilil onRi niRkum uyir mAyam: This delusory thing called life is adequately accommodated in this cottage of a body, amidst plenty of water and bones;
kulai kulainthu therppai idai ninainthu niRpa: when the body collapses, and the relatives stand around planning to lay it upon a bed of weedy-grass (preparatory to cremation),
kodiya koNdal oththa uruvAki maRali vanthu thutta vinaikaL koNdu alaiththu: the evil God of Death (Yaman), with the hue of dark cloud, comes to harass and torment the body;
maraNam enRa thukkam aNukA mun: and just before the woe of death strikes me,
manam idainjal atRu un adi ninainthu niRka mayilil vanthu muththi thara vENum: to enable me to meditate on Your feet, free of any mental anguish, kindly come to me, mounted on the peacock, and grant me liberation!
aRukum inthu maththam alai eRintha appum aLi siRantha putpam athu cUdi: He wears on His matted hair the grass aRuku, crescent moon, Umaththam flower, the wavy waters of the river Gangai and plenty of flowers around which beetles swarm;
aru nadam sey appar aruL irangukaikku ariya in sol seppu murukOnE: He is Your father who danced the rare cosmic dance; when that Lord SivA humbly beseeched You to explain the meaning of the PraNava ManthrA, (acceding to His request) You preached that sweet ManthrA, Oh MurugA!
siRu kulam thanakkuL aRivu vanthu uthiththa siRumi than thanaththai aNai mArpA: Although she was raised by KuRavAs of an inferior lineage, she was an enlightened girl; You embraced the bosom of that damsel VaLLi with Your broad chest, Oh Lord!
thisai mukan thikaikka asurar anRu adaiththa siRai thiRanthu vitta perumALE.: To the consternation of BrahmA, all the celestials previously imprisoned by the demons, were all freed by You, Oh Great One!
