......... Meaning .........

thudikoL nOykaLOdu vatRi: Twitching due to painful diseases, the body is drained out.

tharuNa mEni kOzhai thutRa: What used to be a robust physique is now afflicted with thick slimy mucus in the throat,

irumal eeLai vAtha piththam aNukAmal: cough, wheezing, rheumatism and biliousness. To keep these diseases away from me,

thuRaikaLOdu vAzhvu vittu: I have to renounce this life of two kinds, namely, family life and ascetic life.

ulaka nUlkaL vAthai yatRu: I do not want to be burdened with the need to learn all pedantic works in this world.

sukamuLa anupUthi petRu makizhAmE: Rather than experiencing the blissful self-realisation and enjoying the status,

udalsey kOra pAzhvayitRai nithamum UNinAl uyarththi: I have been feeding the wretched stomach every day with varieties of food to fatten this body.

uyiri needu yOka siththi peRalAmE: Is this an achievement through yOgA, just extending the life?

uruvi lAtha pAzhil vetta veLiyi lAdu nAtha nirththa: In the cosmos without any shape or form, in the milky way, You dance liltingly to the rhythmic music!

unathu njAna pAtha pathma muRuvEnO: Will I ever be able to attain Your hallowed dancing feet that symbolise True Knowledge?

kadithu lAvu vAyu petRa makanum vAli sEyu: Hanuman, the son of VAyu (God of Air), who is capable of leaping with immense speed, and Angathan, the son of VAli,

mikka malaikaL pOda Azhi katti: built a bridge to LankA by throwing many mountains on the sea;

yikalUrpOyk kaLamuR Anai thEr nuRukki: through that bridge He went to the enemy's land, destroyed armies of elephants and chariots in the battlefield

thalaika LARu nAlu petRa avanai vALi yAla daththan marukOnE: and killed Ravana, the ten-headed one, with His arrow; He is Rama, and You are His nephew!

muduku veera chUra pathmar thalaiyin mULai neeRu pattu mudiva thAka: The menacing demons, namely SUran, Padman, Singamukan and TharakAsuran* were killed, with their brains shattered to pieces,

Adu nirththa mayilveerA: and then Your peacock danced a special dance (called thudi), Oh valorous One!

munivar thEvar njAna mutRa: Many sages and celestials attained enlightenment

punitha sOlai mAmalaikkuL muruga vEla: in this impeccable grove at this great mountain (PazhamuthirchOlai**), which is Your abode, Oh MurugA with the Spear!

thyAkar petRa perumALE.: You are the son of ThyAgar (the Sacrificer, SivA), Oh Great One!

* SUran, Padman, Singamukan and TharakAsuran were previously holy fiends in Mount KailAsh. Once they offended all the Divine Vehicles, including Garuda, and Murugan became enraged at this and cursed them to be born as demons in the world. When the spell of their curse was lifted by Murugan, they took forms according to their own wishes, respectively, as Peacock (as the vehicle for Murugan), Rooster (in the staff of Murugan), Lion (as the vehicle for Durga) and Elephant (as the vehicle of AyyanAr) - Kantha PurANam.

** PazhamuthirchOlai is 12 miles north of Madhurai and is known as KaLLazhagar Kovil.
