......... Meaning .........

malam thOl chalam thEtRu elumpAl kalanthu eettidum kUttinil thangidu mAyam: In this delusory life, the body is a nest with a collection of faeces, skin and water, along with plenty of bones;

mayangAth thiyangAp payam(n) kOttidum kAtRudan pOkkuRa: when this body swoons and suffers, and (ultimately) after the life gas (oxygen) meant for the benefit of the body departs,

thanthaiyu(m) mAthum kulam thAykku udampAl piRanthu EtRidum kOththu adam kUppida: the father, the wife, the great mother and the relatives who are like brothers assemble and call out by name at the top of their voice;

tham puvi yAvum kulainthu Arppu ezhum kAttil: people who live in the same town gather in the cremation ground with a depressed heart and weep loudly;

am thALkaL anpAl kuNam kAththu unaik kumpida ALAy: (even at that time,) kindly take charge of me so that I could hold on to Your hallowed feet firmly with love and purity in my heart and offer my prostration at those feet!

thalam thAL thodu aNdAth thaLainthArkku: Upon those devotees who touch the spot of Your hallowed feet and clasp it tight,

iLangkAth thadam thAL pudaiththa anpinar vAzhath tharum kUththarum pArththu ukanthu Eththida: and upon those loved ones who hail loudly Your holy feet deeming them to be a fresh flowery garden and a cool pond, prosperity is bestowed by Lord SivA, the dancing NadarAja, Who acclaims You happily with an applause;;

am sAththiram sAtRi niRkum peru vAzhvE: to that Lord SivA, You preached the great Text of VEdic Knowledge, Oh Great Treasure!

alaintha AtRu ezhum kOc chalam theek kalanthu AL tharam pOcchu enak kanRidum vElA: When the palm-leaf on which You scribed the ManthrA (coming as ThirugnAna Sambandhar) went against the current of the flood water in the river, the ChamaNas who had challenged and vowed against you lost in both competitions on fire and water and felt emasculated by Your rage, Oh Lord with the spear!

aRam kAththu uRangAth thiRam pArththu irunthOrkku ayarnthOrkku aLikkum perumALE.: You grant boons to all those wakeful elders who have found a way to remain tireless so as to preserve the righteous path and to all the devotees who worship You, Oh Great One!
