......... Meaning .........

mangAthu ingu Akkum chiRuvarum uNdE ingu AtRum thuNaiviyum vampa(a)rum thEkku uNdida: I happen to have helpful children who would never let the family's prestige down and a wife who provides support to me throughout the life and I can afford to enjoy immense wealth, feasting in the company of new relatives;

vaRithu e(N)Num vAthai vanthE pon thEttam kodu mana(m) nonthE ingu Attam perithu ezha: however, when the misery of poverty strikes, I have to brood over ways and means of amassing gold, and in that process, I roam about extensively in this life;

vaN pOthan theettum thodar athu padi Eman sangAram pOrc changaiyil udal vem kAnam pOyth thangu uyir koLLa santhEkam theerkkum thanu udan aNukA mun: according to the destiny pre-scripted for me by Lord Brahma, seated on a lush lotus, I am scared of Yaman (God of Death) who is all set to wage a war with me to take my life till I am taken to the crematorium; until the doubt (whether this life will be spared or not) is cleared, he is going to be armed with weapons like the bow; before he actually approaches me,

santhu Aram sAththum puya iyal kanthA enRu Eththum padi en santhApam theerththu enRu adiyiNai tharuvAyE: I wish to praise You with these words "Oh Lord with broad and handsome shoulders smeared with sandalwood paste and wearing the kadappa garland, Oh Lord KandhA who is well-versed in all the three branches of Tamil"; and for that, when will You remove my mental desolation by granting Your hallowed feet?

kangALan pArththan kaiyil adi uNdE thiNdAttam ko(L)Lum nedu kal chApam chArththum karathalan eruthu ERi: He wears a garland of bones; He was beaten by the bow by Arjunan* and subjected to suffering; He holds in His hallowed hand (leaning on His shoulder) Mount MEru as the bow; He mounts the bull (Nandi) as His vehicle;

kantha Avam chErth thaN malar ampAl venthu Arppu onRida vizhi kaNdAn vem kAttu angu anal uRa nadamAdi: He looked with His fiery eye (on His forehead) at Manmathan (God of Love), who was carrying, as his support, a quiver for arrows where he kept fresh and cool flowers, and sent him down screaming and burning; He dances on the cremation ground holding a pot of fire in His hand;

angu Alam kOththu eN thisai puvi mangAthu uNdARku onRu athipathi am thApam theerththu am poruLinai aruLvOnE: On the milky ocean, He scooped the AlakAla poison in its entirety and imbibed it all by Himself in order that all the people in the eight directions of this earth could be spared their life; to that Lord SivA, You came as the apt preacher and removed His holy thirst (for understanding the significance of PraNava ManthrA) by graciously teaching Him the amazing meaning of that ManthrA!

anpAl am thAL kumpidum avar tham pAvam theerththu am puvi idai anjA nenju Akkam thara valla perumALE.: Removing the sins of all Your devotees who worship Your hallowed feet with love, You are also able to grant them on this beautiful earth a mind that does not fear anything and all the wealth, Oh Great One!

* When Arjunan went on a penance in Mount HimAlayAs, a demon mUkan (at the behest of DuryOdhanan) took the disguise of a boar and sprang to kill Arjunan. When Lord SivA came to know about this, He came to Arjunan's rescue in the disguise of a hunter and split the rear end of the boar. Unaware of this, Arjunan wielded an arrow at the face of the boar. Dispute arose between the hunter (SivA) and Arjunan as to who hit the boar first which resulted in a battle of bows. When SivA tore the string of Arjunan's bow, Arjunan beat up SivA with the bare stem of the bow.
