......... Meaning .........

nakaram iru pAtha mAki makaravayi RAki: (In the five-lettered ManthrA "Namasivaya"*) 'Na' represents the two hallowed feet (of Lord NadarAjar); 'ma' represents His abdomen;

mArpu nadusikara mAki vAy vakaramAki: His chest is denoted by the middle letter 'si'; His mouth is represented by the letter 'va';

nathimudiya sAra mAki uthayathiru mEni yAki: and the essence of the letter 'ya' is to be found in His matted hair with the River Ganga;

namasivaya mAmai yAki ezhuthAna: thus all the sacred and exquisite letters of the five-lettered ManthrA "NAMASIVAYA" represent the hallowed body of the Lord Almighty;

akaravuka rEthar Oma sakara vuNar vAna cUran aRivilaRi vAna pUraNamum Akum: the letters 'a' and 'u' constitute the initial letters of OM (AUM) whose causal One is that Lord, and the significance of OM was known to the demon SUran** whose Knowledge was one of total enlightenment!

athanaiadi yEnum Othi ithayakama lAlai yAki maruvumava thAna pOtham aruLvAyE: as I too would like to realise the significance of that ManthrA, kindly bless me with that Knowledge to be experienced inside the lotus temple of my heart!

gukanumaru LANmai kUra makaramenu sApa thAri kuRaiyakala: (Unable to bear the curse heaped on His mother PArvathi), Lord Murugan*** came to this world to reveal His grace and valour and also to eradicate the curse imposed on (SivA's vehicle) Nandi, who was born as a shark;

vElai meethu thaniyUrum kuzhavivadi vAkavE: (Devi PArvathi) appeared as a lonely baby-girl on the sea-shore

nam paratharthava mAka meeRu kulavuthirai sEru mAthu thanainAdi: and was reared by our fishermen-folk, to whose family the Goddess came as a boon and grew up on the wavy sea-shore as a fisher-woman; wooing her,

akilavula kOrkaL kANa athisayama thAka mEvi: as the entire world watched, He came assuming a wonderful disguise of a fisherman (with a fishing net)

ariyamaNa mEsey thEka valaithEdi: and wedded the fisherwoman nicely and left with her; that pursuer with the fishing net was none other than Lord SivA

aRumukavan meeka rAna: who appears to me as the six-faced Murugan, (having an abode in this place, ThiruvArUr) with the name of VanmeekanAthar;

piRaviyama rAsai veesum asapaisekar jOthi nAtha perumALE.: You stand as an effulgence in the form of ajapA ManthrA# that is capable of doing away with birth and Lord Yaman (death), Oh Great One!

In this song, the explanation of the five letters of NAMASIVAYA ManthrA is provided, the significance of PraNava ManthrA OM is stated and the fact that Lord SivA and the six-faced Murugan are one and the same is established.

(*1) Explanation of NAMASIVAYA:

NA = the holy feet;   MA = the abdomen;   SI = chest and shoulders;   VA = the mouth; and   YA = the head;

thus the body of Lord Almighty is the graceful ManthrA.

(*2) The demon SUran realised at the end the significance of OM.

When Lord Murugan appeared in his vision before SUran was killed, he realised that the Causal One in this world had come in the form of Murugan - KandapurANam.
AruNagirinAthar seeks the same knowledge as was graciously bestowed on SUran.

(*3) This is an episode from ThiruviLaiyAdal PurANam:

Once, PArvathi was cursed by Lord SivA to be born as a fisherwoman on the earth. His vehicle, Nandi, was also cursed to be born as a shark. Unable to bear the curse on their mother, Ganapathi and Murugan threw all the text books of SivA into the sea. Murugan was also cursed to be born as a deaf and mute child with the name Rudrasanman in a merchant family. As Murugan boldly faced His father with composure, His valour is praised here. Ultimately, Lord SivA came to this world, disguised as a fisherman, with a fishing net in His hand, and married the fisherwoman (PArvathi).

(*4) This is ajapA ManthrAm:

"sOham" meaning saha (He) + aham (I) = He is I.

In other words, the soul and the Lord are one and the same.
