......... Meaning .........

irathamAna vAy URal parukidA vidAy pOka iniya pOka vAr Azhi athil mUzhki: Having quenched the thirst of passion by imbibing the tasty nectar-like dribble from their lips, having drowned in the big and blissful sea of carnal pleasure,

ithayam vERu pOkAmal uruki EkamAy nALum iniya mAthar thOL kUdi viLaiyAdum sarasa mOkam: and concentrating only on that enjoyment without diverting the mind elsewhere, can the passionate act of hugging the shoulders of the whores every day be compared to (any of the following?)

mA vEtha sariyai yO(ka) kriyA njAna samukamO tharA pUtham muthalAna sakaLamO: individually or collectively, the four methods* of worship, namely, sariyai, kiriyai, yOgam and gnAnam, as defined in the vEdAs? the configuration of the five elements beginning with the earth?

sadAthAra mukuLamO nirAthAra tharaNiyO nirAkAra vadivEyO: the budding forms of the six kuNdalini centres beginning with mUlAthAram**? the self-generated light of the Sun? Or the formless and unique beauty? (It is equal to none of these).

baratha neela mAyUra varatha nAka kEyUra parama yOki mA thEsi miku njAna paramar thEsikA: You mount Your vehicle, the blue peacock, an expert dancer of Bharatha NAtyam! You are the Lord that bestows the boons! He wears the serpent as an ornament on His shoulder; He is a great Yogi; He has a lustrous effulgence around Him; He is the Supreme Lord in the form of true knowledge; You are the great master to that Lord SivA!

vEda pathi vruthA susee pAtha pathuma sEkarA vElai maRavAtha karathalA: She belongs to the lineage of hunters; She is chaste and unblemished; You wear the lotus feet of that VaLLi upon Your head, Oh Lord! You never fail to hold on to the spear in Your hallowed hand!

visAkA sakala kalAtharA pOthaka muka mUshika ArUda matha thAraik kadavuL thAthai sUzh pOthil: Oh VisAkA! You are proficient in all arts! Before Lord Ganapathy, with an elephant face, mounting a large rat, and with His jaws oozing saliva of a ferocious rage, finished circumambulating His father, Lord SivA,

ulakam Ezhu(m) sUzhpOthu karuNai mEruvE thEvar perumALE.: You flew around the seven worlds, Oh Lord with lotus feet! You are the Mount MEru of compassion! You are the Lord of the celestials, Oh Great One!

  * The four methods of worship are:

1.  sariyai:  Worship through service in temples such as doing penance, washing the floor, lighting the lamps, maintaining the flower garden, plucking the flowers for offering, making of garlands, singing of hymns, decorating the deities etc. This is known as 'dhAdha mArgam - sAlOkam'.

2.  kiriyai:  Worship, both inwardly and externally, of a God with a form through daily offerings (pUjA) and with several pUjA materials. This is called 'puthra mArgam - sameepam'.

3.  yOgam:  Inward worship only of a formless God by control of senses, holding the oxygen in the inhaled air and letting it through the six centres of 'kuNdalini chakrA' after understanding each state fully, experiencing the flow of nectar in the 'Lunar zone' between the eyebrows and letting it seep throughout the body and meditating on the full effulgence. This is 'sakha mArgam - sArUbam'.

4.  gnAnam:  Ceasing all external and internal activities, this method consists of worshipping through the medium of intellect alone, seeking the True Knowledge. This is 'san mArgam - sAyujyam'.

** The names of the chakrA centres, the deities, the elements, the zones of the body
where they are located, the shape of the chakrAs, the description of the flowers in the
chakrAs, the letters of the manthrA governing them and the temple-towns representing
