vazhakkuc chol payilvAl saLappadu maruththup pacchilai theetRum mattaikaL: Having practised speaking belligerent words, these useless whores feed (their suitors) with treacherous herbs and medicines;

vaLaiththuc chiththasa sAththirak kaLavu athanAlE manaththuk kaRkaLai neetRu urukkikaL: they are capable of enticing men towards them, adopting deceitful techniques defined in the erotic text of Manmatha (God of Love); then they cunningly powder their suitors' stone-like hearts and melt them;

sukiththuth thettikaL Urath thuthipparai maruttik kuththira vArththai seppikaL: they betray (their suitors) even after deriving pleasure from them; they seduce their admirer in the town and utter words filled with venom;

mathiyAthE kazhuththaik katti aNAppi natpodu siriththup pal kaRai kAtti: with utter disdain, they hug their suitors' necks, cheating them, faking a grin of friendliness and showing their teeth stained by chewing of betel leaves;

kaipporuL kazhatRik kal pukar mAtRu uraippu athu karisu ANi kaNakkittup pozhuthu EtRi vaiththu: they snatch away the belongings (of their suitors) and if they turn out to be precious gems, they begin to examine their quality and colour, and if it is gold, they hasten to graze it on the touchstone to determine if the gold is pure or defective; they while away their time in all such calculations;

oru piNakku ittuc chiluku Akku pattikaL: these whores are cantankerous and trouble making;

kalaikkuL pukkidu pAzhththa puththiyai ozhiyEnO: will I not be able to divert my stupid mind away from the thought of entering their homes and rivetting myself to them?

azhal kaN thappaRai mOttu arakkarai nerukki pottu ezha nUkki: Those foolish demons with fiery eyes were full of falsehood and treachery; You smashed them into pieces

akkaNam azhiththittuk kuRavAtti pon thana kiri thOyvAy: and destroyed them instantaneously; You embraced the beautiful mountain-like bosom of VaLLi, the damsel of the KuRavAs, Oh Lord!

akappattuth thamizh thErththa viththakar samaththuk kattiyil Aththam utRavan: He is enchanted with Tamil poets and is captivated (*1) by the clever meaning of the last line of their verses;

alaikkuL kaN sevi mEl padukkaiyil uRai mAyan: He is the mystic one slumbering on a serpent (AdhisEshan) in the wavy sea; when that Lord VishNu came as a sage,

uzhaik kaN pon kodi mAk kulak kuyil viruppu utRu puNar thOL krupaik kadal: He sired a beautiful creeper-like girl (VaLLi) by union with a deer (Lakshmi in disguise); You fell in love with that cuckoo-like VaLLi and hugged her with Your shoulders, Oh Ocean of Compassion!

uraikkac chettiyanAy pan muththamizh mathiththittuc cheRi nAl kavippaNar: To announce to the world the real meaning of a certain poem, You came (as Rudra Sanman) in the lineage of ChettiyArs (*2), evaluated, with reverence, and researched many verses composed by the Sangam poets;

odukkaththuc cheRivAythf thalaththu uRai perumALE.: along with several stalwarts who are well-versed in poetry of four different kinds (*3), You are seated with relish in this place called odukkaththu seRivAy (*4), Oh Great One!

(*1) Once, the deity in KAnchipuram, Lord VaradarAjar - an aspect of VishNu - decided to leave town and go after the banished devotee, KaNikaNdan, a disciple of the celebrated Tamil poet-cum-devotee, Thirumazhisai AzhvAr; his verse, particularly the cleverly composed last line, was too captivating to the Lord to disobey, and He was named "the obedient Lord".

(*2) Once, in Madhurai, 49 poet-stalwarts of Tamil Sangam wrote interpretation for the work of Lord SivA. To resolve the dispute among them about whose work was the best, Murugan came to Madhurai as a mute and dumb boy Rudrasanman, born in the lineage of Chettis, and listened to all the interpretations. Only when He heard the works of Nakkeeran, Kapilan and BaraNan, He showed so much awe with tears in His eyes that the poets realised which were the best ones and resolved their dispute - ThiruviLaiyAdal PurANam.

(*3) The four varieties of Tamil poetry are:

Asu (alliteration)
Mathuram (sweetness)
Chiththiram (artful presentation) and
ViththAram (description).

(*4) The location of this place could not be determined.
