......... Meaning .........

(The second half of this song describes Lord SivA).

karuppuc chApan anaiya iLainjarkaL pramikkak kAthal ulavu nedukiya kadaik kaN pArvai iniya vanithaiyar thana pAram: "These sweet whores with highly provocative and long eyes and sideways glance are endowed with heavy breasts that enchant young men who resemble Manmathan (God of Love) holding a bow of sugarcane in His hand;

kaLitRuk kOdu kalasa(m) mali nava maNic cheppu Odai vanasa naRu malar kanaththup pALai muRiya varu nikar iLa neer pOl: their bosom may be compared to the ivory tusk of an elephant, the pot, the casket filled with nine precious gems, the fragrant lotus in the brook and the bright and blooming tender coconut whose weight could break the bough of the coconut tree;

poruppaic chAdum valiyai udaiyana aRac chatRAna idaiyai nalivana puthuk kacchu Ara vadam odu adarvana ena: those breasts have the strength of smashing and conquering the mountain; they press heavily on the slender waistline making it even more emaciated; and they are intimately covered by the brand-new blouse and a string of pearls" -

nALum pukazhcchip pAdal adimai avar avar priyappattu ALa urai sey izhi thozhil pokattu eppOthu sariyai kiriyai seythu uyir vAzhvEn: so singing songs in praise of those whores everyday, their paramours are engaged in the activity of choosing passionate words of speech; giving up such demeaning act, when shall I lead a life steadfastly remaining in the service of ardent devotion, treading the paths of sariyai, kiriyai and so on?*

iruttup pAril maRali thanathu udal pathaikkak kAl kodu uthai seythu avan vizha eyil thuppu Ovi amarar udal avar thalai mAlai eluppuk kOvai aNiyum avar: In this world filled with the darkness of ignorance, He kicked with His foot the Lord of Death, Yaman, knocking his shuddering body down; He destroyed the strength of Thiripuram; He has worn as a garland the bodies of the celestials, their heads, and the string of their bones;

mika athirththuk kALi veruva nodiyinil ethirththittu Adum vayira payiravar: making the Goddess tremble violently, He is capable of dancing before the awe-struck KALi in a fraction of second; He is the Great Vairava and Bhairava MUrthy;

navaneetha thiruttup pANi idapa muthuku idai samukku ittu ERi athira varupavar: with saddle in His hand and making a thunderous noise, He mounts the back of His vehicle Rishabha, who is none other than Lord VishNu who came as Krishna, with His hands dipped in butter that He stole;

seluththup pUtham alakai ilakiya padaiyALi sedaikkuL pULai mathiyam ithazhi vauf erukkuc cUdi kumara: He has an army of fiercely moving devils and multitude of fiends; on His matted hair He wears, the pULai (Indian laburnum) flower, the moon, kondRai (Indian laburnum) flower and white leaf of erukku; He is Lord SivA, and You are His Son, Oh Lord!

vayaliyal thiruppuththUril maruvi uRaitharu perumALE.: This place is surrounded by several paddy fields, and You are seated elegantly in this town ThiruppuththUr**, Oh Great One!

  * The four methods of worship are:

1.  sariyai:  Worship through service in temples such as doing penance, washing the floor, lighting the lamps, maintaining the flower garden, plucking the flowers for offering, making of garlands, singing of hymns, decorating the deities etc. This is known as 'dhAdha mArgam - sAlOkam'.

2.  kiriyai:  Worship, both inwardly and externally, of a God with a form through daily offerings (pUjA) and with several pUjA materials. This is called 'puthra mArgam - sameepam'.

3.  yOgam:  Inward worship only of a formless God by control of senses, holding the oxygen in the inhaled air and letting it through the six centres of 'kuNdalini chakrA' after understanding each state fully, experiencing the flow of nectar in the 'Lunar zone' between the eyebrows and letting it seep throughout the body and meditating on the full effulgence. This is 'sakha mArgam - sArUbam'.

4.  gnAnam:  Ceasing all external and internal activities, this method consists of worshipping through the medium of intellect alone, seeking the True Knowledge. This is 'san mArgam - sAyujyam'.

** ThiruppuththUr is near the town of KundRakkudi.
