......... Meaning .........

mAlaiyil vanthu mAlai vazhangu mAlai anangan malarAlum: The well-garlanded Manmathan (God of Love) always comes out in the evening and shoots his flowery arrows that provoke extreme lust;

vAdai ezhunthu vAdai seRinthu vAdai eRintha analAlum: the cool northerly winds blow bringing along the fragrance of flowers which feels like the fiery blast from the North Pole at the end of the aeons (vadamukAgni);

kOlam azhinthu sAla melinthu kOmaLa vanji thaLarA mun: She has lost all her charm and grown weaker; before this young vanji (rattan reed) creeper-like damsel is further disillusioned,

kUdiya kongai neediya anpu kUravum inRu varavENum: You must come and bless her today making her young bosoms distend with love!

kAlan nadunga vEl athu koNdu kAnil nadantha murukOnE: Sending fear waves to Yaman (God of Death), You once walked through the forest (disguised like a hunter) with a spear held in Your hand (for the sake of Poet PoyyAmozhi)*, Oh Muruga!

kAna madanthai nANa mozhinthu: You went to the forest of VaLLimali to see VaLLi, the damsel of the hunters, and spoke to her making her blush

kAthal irangu kumarEsA: and expressed Your deep love for her, Oh Lord Kumara!

sOlai vaLainthu sAli viLainthu sUzhum ilanji makizhvOnE: This town, Ilanji**, is famous for the surrounding groves and fertile paddy fields all around; it is Your happy abode, Oh Lord!

cUriyan anja vAriyil vantha cUranai venRa perumALE.: The sun was scared to rise from the sea where the demon SUran hid, disguised like a mango tree; You conquered that SUran, Oh Great One!

* PoyyAmozhi was a poet bent upon praising only SivA and was totally against Murugan. In an interesting episode, Murugan came in the disguise of a hunter with a spear, encountered the poet in a forest, challenged him for a debate and eventually won him to His side.

** Ilanji is 4 miles away from ThenkAsi Railway Station. It is situated very close to Courtalam falls.

This song has been written in the Nayaka-Nayaki BhAva portraying the pangs of separation of the heroine from Lord Murugan.
The Love God, the flowery arrows and the northerly breeze are some of the sources which aggravate the agony of separation from the Lord.
