mathappatta visAla kapOlamu(m) mukappil sa(n)na Adaiyum Odaiyum maruk kaRpura lEpa lalAtamum manjai Ari: It has a wide jaw that serves as the source for generation of bilious juice; in the front, it has the decorative cover for its face and the ornamental cover for its forehead; fragrant paste of camphor is smeared on the forehead of that elephant on which is fitted a decorative covered pavilion (ampAri) as the seat;

vayitRukku idu seekara pANiyu(m) mithal chekkar vilOchana vEkamu(m) maNic chaththa kadOra purOsamum onRu: it has a very elegant trunk with which it feeds itself; it has exceedingly reddish eyes and a very speedy gait; around its neck a rope is tied with hanging bells that jingle with a loud noise;

kOla vithappatta veL Anaiyil ERiyu(m) niRai kaRpaka neezhalil ARiyum: mounting, in style, that white elephant, AirAvatham, You go about in a procession and later relax peacefully under the shade of the rich and fertile KaRpaga tree;

veLippattu enai AL vayalUril iruntha vAzhvE: Appearing in person in VayalUr to grant me Your vision, You took charge of me graciously, Oh Lord!

ithap pattidavE kamalAlaya oruththikku isaivAna pon Ayiram iyatRap pathi thORum ulAviya thoNdar: To elate his matchless lover, Paravai NAcchiyAr of ThiruvArUr, by showering on her a thousand sovereigns of gold, he went to many Saivite shrines* to earn that gold; when that devotee, Sundarar

* The shrines visited by Sundarar seeking the thousand sovereigns of gold are ThiruppugalUr, ThiruppAsilacchiramam and ThirumuthukundRam.

** Once, a little boy went to take a dip in the nearby lake at ThiruppukkoLiyUr and was eaten alive by a crocodile. After a year, Sundarar, one of the Four Great Saivites, came to the barren lake and heard about the death of the boy. He sang AvinAsi Pathikam whereupon the lake was filled with water. The crocodile came to the bank of the lake and spat out the boy alive, with one year's growth in the body too!.

*** ThiruppukkoLiyUr is located very near AvinAsi.
