......... Meaning .........

(The first 9 lines of the song describe the eyes of the whores).

puNariyum anangkan ampum surumpum karum kayalinodu keNdaiyum chaNdanum kanjamum: The sea, the arrows of Manmathan (God of Love), the beetle, the dark kayal fish, the keNdai fish, Yaman (God of Death), the lotus,

puthu nila varunthiyum thunju nanjum poruppu eRi vElum: the bird sakOram that gobbles up the fresh moonlight, the venom and Your spear that smashed Mount Krouncha to pieces

poru ena ikanRu akanRa angum ingum chuzanRu idai kadai sivanthu vanjam pothinthu ingitham puvi iLainjar mun payinRu: are all comparable to them; those eyes are combative, wide, rolling in several directions, having reddish tinge in their middle and the corners, hiding treacherous thoughts and are highly demonstrative with all sweetness before the young men of the world;

am ponin kampitha kuzai mOthik kuNalaiyodum inthriyam sanjalam kaNdidum padi amar purinthu: they impinge upon the beautiful golden ear-studs that swing; they wage a war acting so sensationally and with so much ado that the five sensory organs of the beholders are driven to agony;

arum sangadam santhatham kodumaisey thusam kodum singi thangum kadaikkaNNinar pAl: they have hoisted the flag of harassment that causes extreme pain at all times; the eyes always contain venom when these whores cast sidelong glances;

kulavu pala sem thanam thanthu thanthu inpuRum thri vitha karaNangaLum kantha nin sem patham kuRukum vakai anthiyum santhiyum thontham atRu amaivEnO: I have been showering several valuable gifts repeatedly on these whores feeling exhilaration in my three inner faculties (namely, mind, speech and body); Oh Lord KanthA, in order to approach Your hallowed feet, filled with greatness, will I not be able to meditate upon You whole-heartedly day and night so that I could sever worldly attachments?

thuNar viri kadampa men thongalum pampu uRum puzhukum asalam pasum santhanam kungumam thoku kaLapamum thuthainthu enRu nanku onRu(m) paththiru thOLum: Along with soft garlands made of fully blossomed kadappa flowers, effusive cream of civet, fresh paste of sandalwood grown in the mountains, vermillion and a blend of pigments are cohesively smeared on Your twelve shoulders that are always benevolent; those shoulders,

tholaivu il saNmukangaLum thanthira manthrangaLum pazhani malaiyum parang kundRamum senthilum thuthi seyu(m) meyanpartham sinthaiyum senRu seyppathi vAzhvAy: Your six eternal and hallowed faces, the treatises that describe the ways to worship You, Your manthrAs, Mount Pazhani, Thirupparang KundRam and ThiruchchendhUr are always praised by Your true devotees in whose mind You are seated; You have an abode also in VayalUr, Oh Lord!

kaNa paNa puyangamum kangaiyum thingaLum kuravum aRukum kuRum thumpaiyum konRaiyum kamazh sadila sampuvum kumpidum paNpudaik kuru nAthA: He has fragrant and matted hair on which He wears a serpent having a bunch of hoods, the river Gangai, the crescent moon, the kurA flower, the aRugam (cynodon) grass, the little thumbai (leucas) flower and kondRai (Indian laburnum) flower; and You have the privilege of being worshipped by that Lord SivA, Oh Great Master!

kana kudakil ninRa kundRam tharum sangaran kuRu muni kamaNdalam koNdu mun kaNdidum kathi sey: The river KavEri began its flow from the famous mountain in Coorg; that river came out of the water jug with a spout (kamaNdalam) used by ascetic Agasthya*, the dwarf-sage, who worships Lord SivA;

nathi vanthu uRum then kadampanthuRai perumALE.: that river KAvEri comes and joins the banks in ThenkadambanthuRai** where You are seated, Oh Great One!

* Due to a trick played by Sage NArathar, Mount Vindhya began to grow in competition with Mount MEru and blocked the passage from the North to the South. Upon a fervent appeal by the celestials, Lord SivA sealed the river KAvEri inside the water jug carried by Sage Agasthya who was sent south of Vindhya. Agasthya went to the South and spread the water of KAvEri out of his jug.

** This town is located 1 mile northwest of Kuzhiththalai which is west of Tiruchi.
