......... Meaning .........

sUlam ena Odu sarppa vAyuvai vidAthu adakki: The serpent-like pranic air (oxygen) running in three branches like the prongs of a trident* is to be held and restrained

thUya oLi kANa muththi vithamAka: in order to have a vision of the pure and brilliant light and to attain the liberated state of bliss.

sUzhum iruL pAvakaththai veezha azhal Udu eriththu: The form of arrogance, like the surrounding darkness, is to be destroyed by burning it in the fire of yOgA.

sOthi maNi peedam itta madam mEvi: Then, one must enter the unblemished abode where the dazzling shrine studded with gems is situated.

mElai veLi Ayiraththu nAl iru parAparaththin mEvi aruNAsalaththinudan mUzhki: In that supreme cosmos, one must unite with the 1008-petalled lotus of the Master (SahasrAram**) and immerse in the holy water reflecting the reddish glow of SivA - the True Knowledge.

vElu mayil vAkana prakAsam athilE thariththu: At that stage, the bright vision of the Spear and Your vehicle, Peacock, will be seen.

veedum athuvE siRakka aruL thArAy: Kindly bless me to realise that vision and grand liberation!

Ola asurar Azhi ettu vALakiri mAya: The wailing demons, the seas in the eight directions and the Mount ChakravALam - all perished

veRpum Uduruva vEl thoduththa mayil veerA: and the Mount Krouncha was pierced by the spear wielded by You, Oh valorous Lord, mounting the Peacock!

Othu kuRa mAn vanaththil mEvi avaL kAl pidiththu: You went to the millet-field in the forest where VaLLi, the deer-like damsel of the hunters, lived; then, You caressed her feet;

uL Om enum upathEsa viththodu aNaivOnE: and later, You embraced her after preaching to her the PraNava ManthrA, ensuring that she fully understood its significance!

kAlanodu mEthi matka Uzhi puvi mEl kidaththu kAlan: Yaman, the God of Death, and His vehicle, the buffalo, were both knocked down by His foot according to their fate; He was Lord SivA***, the Yaman of the God of Death Himself;

idam mEvu saththi aruL pAlA: concorporate on His left side is Mother ParAsakthi, PArvathi; and You are Her son, Oh Lord!

kAlam muthal vAzh puvikku athAra nakar kOpuraththuL: This town, ThirukkadavUr, has been in existence for aeons as the base of the earth; in its high tower,

kAna mayil mEl thariththa perumALE.: You are seated, mounted on a pretty wild peacock, Oh Great One!

  * In this song, several Siva-yOgA principles are explained:

The inhaled air is known as 'pUragam' and the exhaled air is 'rechagam'. The retained air is 'kumbagam'. The oxygen that enters the body climbs up step by step through several centres, known as 'chakrAs' and ultimately reaches 'sahasrAram' or 'bindhuchakram' on the top of the skull. At that point of union, nectar flows from that chakrA and seeps through and soaks the six centres of the body and returns to the basic chakrA, 'mUlAthAram'. Three zones (namely, the sun zone, the moon zone and the fire zone) and ten nerves ('nAdis') govern the six centres; the principal nerves are 'susumna', 'idaikala' and 'pingala'.

idakala: one of the ten 'nAdis' (nerves), when inhalation takes place through the left nostril;
pingala: one of the ten 'nAdis' (nerves), when inhalation takes place through the right nostril;
susumna: one of the ten 'nAdis' (nerves), situated between the above two 'nadis', and running through the spinal chord covering all the six centres of 'kundalini'. ('idakala' and 'pingala' are entwined around 'susumna').

If breathing is controlled through a yOgA called 'praNAyAmA', the mind becomes tranquil.

    ** The names of the chakrA centres, the deities, the elements, the zones of the body
    where they are located, the shape of the chakrAs, the description of the flowers in the
    chakrAs, the letters of the manthrA governing them and the temple-towns representing
    them are given in the following chart:

*** To save His devotee MArkandEyA from Yaman, Lord SivA kicked off Yaman and stood there as KAla SamhAra MUrthy, God of Death for Yaman Himself.

ThirukkadavUr is 13 miles southeast of MayilAduthurRai - MAyUram.
