......... Meaning .........

Ettin vidhippadiyE kodu mA pura veettil adaiththu: This life has been filled in this good body as assigned by BrahmA in the leaf of destiny.

isaivE kasai mUNadhil Etri adiththidavE: Three whip-like veins (namely, cuzhumunai, idaikalai and pingalai)* have been rivetted to this body;

kadal Odamadhu ena vEgi: like a little boat being tossed about in the sea, I have passed time hovering around;

ERkum ena poruLAsai peNAsai koLA thu enath thiriyA pariyA: I hankered after gold and women thinking that such a pursuit was advisable; many people mocked at me while I was roaming about in misery;

thavam Etri iruppidamE aRiyAmalum udal pENi: not knowing where I could seek solace through penance, I carried on nurturing this body of mine,

pUttu sarappaLiyE madhanAmena: displaying pompously the diamond pendant around my neck so that others could look upon me as the God of Love (Manmathan).

Atti asaith iyalE thiri nALaiyil: In those days, when I was showing off, shaking and moving my body hither and thither,

pUththa malakguhaiyO podhi sORena kazhu kAgam pOtri namak iraiyAm enavE koLa: vultures and crows considered this body to be a potential prey as if it were a cavern full of faeces or a bundle of cooked rice.

nAtti lodukkenavE vizhu pOdhinil: On this earth, at the final hour when all my vital signs would have ebbed,

pUttu paNip padha mA mayilA aruL purivAyE: kindly bless me graciously; You are the One mounting the great peacock that has a serpent tied to its feet tightly!

veettil adaith theriyE idu pAthakan: Duryodhanan, the treacherous one, set fire to the palace of lacquer in which the five PANdavAs were confined;

nAttai viduth thidavE pala sUdhinil veezhththa: he eventually banished them from the country by defeating them in many gambling games;

vidhip padiyE kuru kAvalar vanamE pOy: led by their fate, the PANdavAs, the princes of Kuru Dynasty, went to the forest;

vEtrumai yutruru vOdiyal nAL adhu pArththu mudith thidavE: they were leading a life in disguise, and when the stipulated time of banishment ended,

oru bAratha mERpunai viththa mahAvira mAyavan marugOnE: a major battle of the BhAratha was initiated by the great warrior, Krishna; and You are His nephew!

kOttai azhiththu asurArpathi kO ena: You destroyed SUran's fort of Mahendrapuri; the head of the demons shrieked in fear;

mUtti eriththa parApara sEkara: and his town was burnt down by You, the Supreme and Handsome One!

kOththa maNik kadhirE nigarAgiya vadivElA: Your sharp spear dazzles like the bright red rubies studded together, Oh Lord!

kUtru marith thidavE udhai pArvathiyArkkum: She kicked him with Her left leg to knock Yaman (God of Death) dead; to that Goddess PArvathi

iniththa peNAgiya mAn magaL kOttu mulaik adhipA: this girl is very dear, having been delivered by a deer; You are the Lord of that VaLLi's mountain-like bosom!

kadavUr uRai perumALE.: You have Your abode in ThirukkadavUr,** Oh Great One!

  * In this song, several Siva-yOgA principles are explained:

The inhaled air is known as 'pUragam' and the exhaled air is 'rechagam'. The retained air is 'kumbagam'. The oxygen that enters the body climbs up step by step through several centres, known as 'chakrAs' and ultimately reaches 'sahasrAram' or 'bindhuchakram' on the top of the skull. At that point of union, nectar flows from that chakrA and seeps through and soaks the six centres of the body and returns to the basic chakrA, 'mUlAthAram'. Three zones (namely, the sun zone, the moon zone and the fire zone) and ten nerves ('nAdis') govern the six centres; the principal nerves are 'susumna', 'idaikala' and 'pingala'.

idakala: one of the ten 'nAdis' (nerves), when inhalation takes place through the left nostril;
pingala: one of the ten 'nAdis' (nerves), when inhalation takes place through the right nostril;
susumna: one of the ten 'nAdis' (nerves), situated between the above two 'nadis', and running through the spinal chord covering all the six centres of 'kundalini'. ('idakala' and 'pingala' are entwined around 'susumna').

If breathing is controlled through a yOgA called 'praNAyAmA', the mind becomes tranquil.

** ThirukkadavUr is 13 miles southeast of MayilAduthurai - MAyUram.
This place is famous for KAla Bhairava MUrthy (Lord SivA) who kicked away the God of Death (Yaman) to protect His devotee, MArkaNdEyA.
