madhiL neendu sAladhinakaran Eyndha mALigaiyil: He lived in a very sunny palace around which stood a lengthy fortress wall.

Aram sezhumaNi sErndha peedigaiyil: He reclined on a seat adorned with pearls and precious gems.

isai vAyndha pAdal vayiriyar sErndhu pAda: The courtesan singers sang in unison praising him.

iru pAlum inavaLai pUNkaiyAr kavariyida: On both sides, damsels, wearing similar pairs of bangles, stood ministering to him with fans, gently.

vEyndhu mAlai puzhugagil sAndhu pUsi arasAgi: He was wearing garlands on his chest smeared with fragrant punugu, sandal paste and incense. He was leading a Royal life!

inidhiRu mAndhu vAzhum: He was happy and extremely proud!

iruvinai neenda kAyam: But, his body was bound by the karma of both good and bad deeds.

neeRu karuNaikoL pAndi nAdu peRa: while the holy ash was distributed by You throughout the Kingdom of PANdiyan, the recipient of Your compassion;

bAla kazhumala pUndha rAya: Oh Young Lord! You came as ThirugnAna SambandhAr to SeegAzhi*, also known as Kazhumalam and PUndharAy.

kavuNiyar vEndha dhEvar perumALE.: You are the King of KavuNiyas, Oh Lord, of the Celestials!





* SeegAzhi is 11 miles south of Chidhambaram. It is the place of birth of one of the Saivite Quartets, ThirugnAna SambandhAr.

The other names for SeekAzhi are as follows:

1. vENupuram: The shrine where Indra named VENu worshipped to overcome his fear of a demon, Gajamuka.
2. Thiruppukali: It is the place of refuge for the celestials who were terrified by the demon SUran.
3. Venguru: It is the shrine where Brahaspathi (Jupiter) worshipped.
4. PUntharAy: It is the shrine where Earth and ThArai worshipped.
5. Sirapuram: When the nectar was distributed by Lord VishNu to the celestials, Rahu and KEthu stealthily came as DEvAs and were beheaded by VishNu; at this shrine, they worshipped and got their heads back.
6. PuRavam: At this shrine a sage PrajApathi came in the disguise of a pigeon and offered his flesh as a sacrifice to save the king.
7. SaNpai: Sage DurvAsA, kinown as Sanpaimuni, worshipped at this shrine.
8. SeekAzhi: A serpent named KALi worshipped at this shrine.
9. Kocchai: Sage ParAsara was cursed by other sages and developed a stench all over his body which was removed after his worship at this shrine.
10. Kazhumalam: This is a shrine where all the sins of souls are washed away.
11. Piramapuram: This is a shrine where Lord Brahma offered worship.
12. ThONipuram: This shrine had the distinction of floating like a boat during the devastating flood at the end of the aeons.
