......... Meaning .........

chekkar vAnap piRaikku ikku mAraRku a(l)la: Not only because of the crescent moon in the reddish sky and the God of Love (Manmathan) holding the sugarcane bow,

theRkil Uthaikku anal thaNiyAtha sithra veeNaikku: but also because of the chilling southerly breeze and the melodious sound of Chitra VeeNa, burning (the ears) unremittingly,

alar petRa thAyarkku avac ciththam vAdi: and because of the scandal-mongering womenfolk, I became depressed unnecessarily;

kanak kavi pAdi: (to enable me to pay the whores, I sought rich people and on them) I sang many lengthy songs;

kaik kapOlak kiri pon koL rAsik kodaik kaRpa thAruc ceka thraya bAnu: (in those songs) I described them as great mountains with a trunk and a huge jaw like the white elephant AirAvadham; as fortunate ones who would amass gold; as the wish-yielding KaRpaga Tree in giving alms; as the prominent sun, shining in the three worlds;

katRa pEr vaippu enac ceththai yOkaththinark kaikkuL nAn vetki niRpathu pArAy: and as the safe repository for the learned poets; knowing that these were false tributes, I shamelessly fell into the hands of these men fortunate to be possessing the rubbish called wealth; kindly look at my humiliating plight with compassion.

sakra pANikkum ap pathma yOnikku(m) niththa prathAparkkum etta arithu Aya: To Lord VishNu, holding a disc in His hand, to BrahmA who emerged on the lotus sprouting from the abdomen of VishNu and to Lord SivA who is famously known as the immortal God, It was beyond comprehension;

thathva vEthaththin uRpaththi pOthiththa ath thathva rUpa: It was the origin of all scriptures, and You, as the Entity of True Knowledge, preached It!

kirip purai sAdik kokkilE pukku oLiththidda cUr pottu ezha kuththu: Vanquishing the arrogance of Mount Krouncha, You also pierced with Your spear, the body of the demon SUran who assumed the disguise of a mango tree,

rAvuththa poR kumarOnE: Oh valorous One, mounted on the horse-like peacock! Oh handsome KumarA!

kotRavA uRpalac cecchai mAlaip puyak kocchai** vAzh muththamizhp perumALE.: Oh Lord, Your shoulders are adorned with garlands of flowers like blue lily and vetchi! You are seated in Your abode at SeegAzhi* as the Master of the three branches of Tamil, Oh Great One!
