......... Meaning .........

saruvi igazhndhu maruNdu veguNduRu samayamum: All the religions, bickering among themselves, caught in delusions and throwing temper tantrums;

ondrilai endra varum: those non-religious ones who deny even the existence of God;

paRithalaiyaru: and those ChamaNas, whose members pluck the hair (of the Master-to-be among them)*;

nindru kalanga virumbiya thamizh kURum: were all in a state of shell-shock when You (as ThirugnAna Sambandhar) narrated the endearing songs (ThEvAram) in Tamil.

saligaiyu nandriyum vendriyu mangaLa perumaigaLum: That command**; Your compassion; Your triumphs; Your auspicious glories;

ganamung guNamum payil saravaNamum: Your loftiness; Your great virtues; the famous pond of Saravana where You grew up;

poRaiyum pugazhun thigazh thanivElum: Your forbearance; Your fame; Your matchless and bright Spear;

virudhu thulanga sikaNdiyil aNdarum urugi vaNanga varumpadhamum: Your holy feet, victoriously displayed on the peacock, worshipped by the Celestials ardently;

pala vitharaNamun thiRamun tharamum: Your manifold charitable acts; Your skills; Your nobleness;

thinai puna mAnin mrigamadha kungkuma kongaiyil nondhu: Your submission to the deer-like damsel (VaLLi) in the millet field, cuddling in her bosom, fragrant with the paste of musk and vermilion,

adivarudi maNandhu puNarndhadhuvum: caressing her feet, leading to Your marriage and union with her;

pala vijayamum: and Your several victories** - all these,

anbin mozhindhu mozhindhiyal maRavEnE: I want to keep on praising again and again with love. I can never forget Your greatness!

karudhi ilankai azhindhu vidumpadi: Considering the wrong acts (of Ravana), Rama decided to destroy LankA;

avuNar adanga madindhu vizhumpadi: He also was determined to annihilate all the asuras (demons);

kadhiravan indhu viLangi varumpadi vidumAyan: and He wanted to restore the old glories of the Sun and the Moon - so He, the mystical one, made sure that those events occurred;

kadakari anji nadungi varundhidu: When the wild elephant, GajEndran, was scared, trembling in distress in the pond,

vandh udhavum puyal: He (Vishnu), with the complexion of the dark cloud, rushed to his rescue;

indhirai kaNavan aranga mukundhan: He is the consort of Lakshmi; He is Ranganathan of Srirangam; He is also Mukundhan;

varunchakadu aRamOdhi: (As Krishna) He smashed to pieces the speeding wheel (SakadAsuran) which came rolling to kill him;

marudhu kulungi nalanga munindhidu varadhan: He also showed His rage on the Marutha trees which were shaken and felled down; He is Varadhan (bestower of boons);

alangal punaindh aruLung kuRaL vadivan: He came as a dwarf (Vamanan) wearing a garland;

nedung kadal mangavor ambu kai thodumeeLi: He (as Rama) was the strong archer who threw a powerful arrow from His hand to tame the vast sea, sending it into turmoil;

maruga: and You are that Great Vishnu's nephew!

purandharanun thavam ondriya birama puran thanilum: In this holy place, Brahmapuram*** (SeegAzhi), where even IndrA settled once to do a penance,

guhan enbavar manadhinilum: and in the hearts of those who praise You calling "Oh GuhA!",

pari vondri amarndharuL perumALE.: You reside with relish and compassion, Oh Great One!

* Among the ChamaNas, there is a peculiar custom whereby the Master-to-be is surrounded by other masters who chant the ManthrA 'Today's misery is tomorrow's bliss' and begin to pluck all his hair.

** saligai means command: from this aspect the poet describes 16 features of Murugan until he speaks about His victories. This is noteworthy.

*** SeegAzhi is 11 miles south of Chidhambaram.
It is the place of birth of one of the Saivite Quartets, ThirugnAna SambandhAr.

The other names for SeekAzhi are as follows:

1. vENupuram: The shrine where Indra named VENu worshipped to overcome his fear of a demon, Gajamuka.
2. Thiruppukali: It is the place of refuge for the celestials who were terrified by the demon SUran.
3. Venguru: It is the shrine where Brahaspathi (Jupiter) worshipped.
4. PUntharAy: It is the shrine where Earth and ThArai worshipped.
5. Sirapuram: When the nectar was distributed by Lord VishNu to the celestials, Rahu and KEthu stealthily came as DEvAs and were beheaded by VishNu; at this shrine, they worshipped and got their heads back.
6. PuRavam: At this shrine a sage PrajApathi came in the disguise of a pigeon and offered his flesh as a sacrifice to save the king.
7. SaNpai: Sage DurvAsA, kinown as Sanpaimuni, worshipped at this shrine.
8. SeekAzhi: A serpent named KALi worshipped at this shrine.
9. Kocchai: Sage ParAsara was cursed by other sages and developed a stench all over his body which was removed after his worship at this shrine.
10. Kazhumalam: This is a shrine where all the sins of souls are washed away.
11. Piramapuram: This is a shrine where Lord Brahma offered worship.
12. ThONipuram: This shrine had the distinction of floating like a boat during the devastating flood at the end of the aeons.
