Song 739 - seedha madhiyam (thiruvAmUr)

seetha mathiya meRikkun ...... thazhalAlE

seeRi mathanan vaLaikkum ...... silaiyAlE

Otha maruvi yalaikkum ...... kadalAlE

Uzhi yiravu tholaikkum ...... padiyOthAn

mAthu pukazhai vaLarkkum ...... thiruvAmUr

vAzhu mayili lirukkum ...... kumarEsA

kAtha ladiyar karuththin ...... peruvAzhvE

kAlan muthukai virikkum ...... perumALE.

......... Meaning .........

seetha mathiya meRikkun thazhalAlE: The fire emitted by the rays of the cool moon,

seeRi mathanan vaLaikkum silaiyAlE: the bow bent by the fierce God of Love (Manmathan),

Otha maruvi yalaikkum kadalAlE: and the sea throwing out swirling waves, -

Uzhi yiravu tholaikkum padiyOthAn: all these make the night too long like the doom's day; how can I make the night go away?

mAthu pukazhai vaLarkkum thiruvAmUr: In the town ThiruvAmUr, made famous by the great lady, Thilakavathi*,

vAzhu mayili lirukkum kumarEsA: You have Your abode, Oh Kumaresa! You mount the Peacock, Oh Lord!

kAtha ladiyar karuththin peruvAzhvE: You are the greatest treasure found in the thoughts of Your loving devotees!

kAlan muthukai virikkum perumALE.: You smack Yaman (God of Death) splitting his back, Oh Great One!

* Thilakavathi was the sister of the Saivite Saint Appar. She lived in ThiruvAmUr where she redeemed her brother into Saivism back from Jainism.

This song is based on the Nayaka-Nayaki Bhavam, where the poet, assuming the heroine's role, expresses the pang of separation from the hero, Murugan.
The moonlight, waves of the sea, the God of Love Manmathan, His bow and arrows are a few of the things that aggravate the agony of separation.
