......... Meaning .........

maru aRA vetRi malar thodA vil kai vali seyA niRku(m) mathanAlum: The fragrance of his flowery arrows still lingers; wielding those triumphant arrows and holding his bow (of sugarcane) in his hand, Manmathan, God of Love, stands firm;

mathilkaL thAvutRa kalai padA vatta mathi sudA niRkum athanAlum: rising above the fortress walls, the round moon continues to radiate its scorching rays (upon her);

iru ka(N)NAl muththam uthira yAmaththin iravinAl niththam meliyAthE: because of them, both her eyes are shedding pearl-like tears daily throughout the yamams* of the night; lest she becomes weaker any further,

idar uRA meththa mayal ko(L)LA niRkum ivaLai vAzhvikka vara vENum: kindly come to give life to this young girl who suffers miserably from excessive passion!

karikaL sEr veRpil ariya vEdicchi kalavi kUr sithra maNi mArpA: In the Mount VaLLimalai where many elephants were assembled, You joined VaLLi, the dear damsel of the hunters, and cohabited with her with Your hallowed chest, Oh Lord!

kanaka mANikka vadivanE mikka kathirakAmaththil uRaivOnE: Your complexion is like that of gold and ruby, Oh Lord! You have Your abode in this famous place, KadhirgAmam!

murukanE paththar arukanE muththi muthalvanE pacchai mayil veerA: Oh MurugA! You stay very close to Your devotees! You are the foremost One delivering liberation! You are the valorous One who mounts the green peacock!

muduki mElitta kodiya cUr kettu muRiya vEl thotta perumALE.: When the evil demon SUran confronted You swiftly, You wielded Your weapon, the spear, to destroy and kill him, Oh Great One!

* yAmam = a time period of three hours; the evening is divided into four yamams.

This song has been written in the Nayaka-Nayaki BhAva portraying the pangs of separation of the heroine from Lord Murugan.
The Love God, the flowery arrows and the moon are some of the sources which aggravate the agony of separation from the Lord.
