......... Meaning .........

samara muka vEl oththa vizhi puraLa vAr itta thanam asaiya veethikkuL mayil pOl ulAviyE: Their rolling eyes are sharp like the spear specially honed for the battlefield; shaking their breasts covered by tight blouses, they walk along the street like peacocks;

sariyai kriyai yOkaththin vazhi varu krupA suththar thamai uNara rAkaththin vasamAka mEviyE: even those great men, full of grace and purity, who abide by the four methods* of worship, namely, sariyai, kiriyai, yOgam (and gnAnam), are made to fall for them passionately by their seductive gestures;

umathu adi u(n)nArukkum anumaraNa mAyaikkum uriyavar makA thaththai enu(m) mAya mAtharAr: they belong to men who do not contemplate Your hallowed feet and who are under the delusory spell that causes death; these whores are like great parrots capable of casting a magical charm;

oLir amaLi peedaththil amadu paduvEnukkum unathu aruL krupA siththam aruL kUra vENumE: even though I have been entangled in their bright bed, kindly offer me Your gracious blessing!

ima kiri kumAraththi anupavai parAsaththi ezhutha ariya gAyathri umaiyAL kumAranE: She is the daughter of King HimavAn of the HimAlayAs; She makes one feel happy all the time; She is the Supreme Mother Sakthi; She has the form of GAyathri ManthrA that can never be grasped through description; and You are the son of that UmAdEvi!

eyinar mada mAnukku madal ezhuthi mOkiththu ithaN aruku sEvikkum murukA visAkanE: Oh MurugA, You resorted to scribing the madal** for VaLLi, the deer-like damsel of the hunters, and with extreme passion, You approached the raised platform where she stood and prostrated at her feet, Oh VisAkA!

amarar siRai meeLvikka amar seythu prathApikkum athika vitha sAmarthya kavi rAjarAjanE: You became famous by fighting the war to liberate the celestials from their prison; You are the emperor among many famous and proficient crown-poets!

azhuthu ulakai vAzhviththa kavuNiya kula Athiththa: You cried (coming as a child, ThirugnAna Sambandhar, and imbibing the nectar-like milk, breast-fed by DEvi PArvathi) and uplifted the world (with ThEvAram hymns), Oh the sun of Knowledge, born in the lineage of kavuNiyars!

ariya kathir kAmaththil uriya apirAmanE.: You belong to the rare town, KadhirgAmam, Oh Handsome One!

  * The four methods of worship are:

1.  sariyai:  Worship through service in temples such as doing penance, washing the floor, lighting the lamps, maintaining the flower garden, plucking the flowers for offering, making of garlands, singing of hymns, decorating the deities etc. This is known as 'dhAdha mArgam - sAlOkam'.

2.  kiriyai:  Worship, both inwardly and externally, of a God with a form through daily offerings (pUjA) and with several pUjA materials. This is called 'puthra mArgam - sameepam'.

3.  yOgam:  Inward worship only of a formless God by control of senses, holding the oxygen in the inhaled air and letting it through the six centres of 'kuNdalini chakrA' after understanding each state fully, experiencing the flow of nectar in the 'Lunar zone' between the eyebrows and letting it seep throughout the body and meditating on the full effulgence. This is 'sakha mArgam - sArUbam'.

4.  gnAnam:  Ceasing all external and internal activities, this method consists of worshipping through the medium of intellect alone, seeking the True Knowledge. This is 'san mArgam - sAyujyam'.

** madal ERuthal means sending out passion-filled doodles in palm leaves. Here, the passion-stricken hero makes several doodles and mounts a horse made of palm leaves to go around the town announcing to the world his love for the heroine.
