......... Meaning .........

pAttil urugilai: Oh my mind, You do not melt down on realising the meanings of the songs.

kEttum urugilai: Even if the meaning is explained, You fail to melt.

kUtru varuvazhi pArththum urugilai: Even on seeing the path through which Yaman (God of Death) is coming, You do not thaw in devotion for the Lord.

pAttai anudhinam Etrum aRgilai: Despite facing all the miseries everyday, You do not realise the truth.

dhinamAnam pAppa NiyanaruL veettai vizhaigilai: Day in and day out, you never seek the blissful liberation granted by Lord SivA who is wearing the snakes on His tresses.

nAkki nunikodu Eththa aRigilai: You do not know to utter words of praise to the Lord even from the tip of your tongue.

pAzhththa piRaviyil Etra manadhu: Having taken many wretched births in this world, oh my mind,

nal vazhipOga mAtta menugiRai: you are not willing to seek the righteous way

kUttai vidugilai: nor are you prepared to relinquish the shell of your body.

Ettin vidhivazhi Ottam aRigilai: You do not also know the path through which destiny, inscribed in the leaf of your fate, is driving you.

pArththum iniyoru vArththai aRaiguvan idhukELAy: I cannot be a mere spectator to your plight. I shall give you a piece of advice, please listen to me.

vAkkum unadhuLa nOkkum aruLuvan Eththa pugazh: He is the one who will grant you graciously the appropriate words to praise His glory and the ability to see His vision.

adiyArkkum eLiyanai: He is easily accessible to His devotees.

vAzhththa iruvinai neekku muruganai maruvAyO: He removes both the good and bad deeds of those who worship Him. He is Lord Murugan, and you must meditate on Him.

Atti vadavarai vAtti aravodu pUtti: He makes the entire universe dance. He bent Meru, the mountain in the north, like a bow and tied the serpent VAsuki as the bow's string.

thiripura mUtti: He set fire to Thiripuram.

maraliyin Atta maRa saraneetti: He subdued the arrogance of Yaman (God of Death) by kicking him with His extended foot.

madhanudal thiruneeRAy Akki: He burnt down the body of Manmathan (God of Love) into ashes.

magamadhai veetti: He devastated the sacrificial rite of Dhakshan*.

oruvanai Attin mugamadhai nAtti: He attached the head of a goat on the body of Dhakshan.

maRaimagaL Arkkum vaduvuRa vAttum: He punished Saraswathi, the Goddess of Scriptures, by inflicting injuries on Her face.

umaiyavan aruLbAlA: He is the consort of UmAdEvi, and You are the son of that Lord SivA!

seettai yezhudhi vaiyAtril edhiruRa Otti: He wrote the sacred ManthrA on a palm-leaf and set it out against the current in River Vaihai;

azhalpasai kAtti: He held against fire the palm-leaf which remained fresh and green without burning;

samaNarai seetram odu kazhuvEtra: with rage, He sent the ChamaNas (who lost in the debate) to the gallows;

aruLiya gurunAthA: and He (ThirugnAna SambandhAr) was none other than You, Oh Great Master!

theerththa enadhagam Ettai udan ninai Eththa: Oh Immaculate One! In order that my mind eagerly pays obeisance to You,

aruLudan nOkki aruLudhi: kindly bless me with compassion!

theerththa malai nagar kAththa sasimagaL perumALE.: You are the protector of this place known as Theerththa Malai**! You are the Lord of DEvayAnai, the daughter of IndrANi, Oh Great One!

* Dhakshan's daughter DhAkshAyani was married to Lord SivA. Arrogant Dhakshan heaped abuses on both SivA and his daughter. In the penance performed by Dhakshan, SivA came as Veerabhadran and devastated the penance, killing Dhakshan. On his headless body, SivA attached a goat's head. In His rage, SivA inflicted injuries on the face of Goddess Saraswathi who came to Dhakshan's penance - Kandha PurANam.

**Theerththa Malai is in SAlem District, 17 miles northeast of Morappur Railway Station.
