......... Meaning .........

katta mannum aLLal kotti paNNum aivarkatku mannum illam ithu pENi: It is a sludge full of miseries; it is the house for the five senses which are stage-managed to dance to the rhythm of the "kodokotti" dance; nurturing this body,

katRa vinjnjai solli utRa eNmai uL ukakka eNNi: I narrated all the tricks that I learnt for enjoyment in the easy way with a desire to revel;

mullai nakai mAthar ittam engngan nalla kotti: I yielded to the avarice of the whores who had neat rows of teeth like the jasmine flowers and showered on them many valuable gifts;

angngan nalki ittu ponnai illai ena Eki: having parted with all my belongings, I departed saying that I had no more gold to give them;

eththu poymmai uLLal utRum inmai uLLi etRum ingngan naivathu iyalpO thAn: then I used to think of ways of deceiving them and rue over my inability to afford them; was all this anguish justified at all?

mutta uNmai sollu chetti thiNmai koLLa mutta nanmai viLLa varuvOnE: You came as Rudra Sanman* into the chetti family to reveal the whole truth and to establish peace among the quarelling poets, Oh Lord!

muththu vaNNa valli sithra vaNNa valli muththi viNNa valli maNavALA: You are the consort of DEvayAnai who is like a creeper of the hue of pearl, with picturesome beauty and who belongs to the celestial world with an ability to offer liberation!

pattam mannu a(v) valli matta manna valli patta thunnu kolli malai nAdA: You belong to the dense forest of Kollimalai** where an enchantress*** greets one on the road, who is so beautiful as to inebriate the seer!

pacchai vanni alli secchai cenni uLLa pacchai manjnjai valla perumALE.: You adorn Your head with the green flowers of vanni, alli and vetchai, and You are the Lord capable of mounting and driving the green peacock, Oh Great One!

* Once, in Madhurai, 49 poet-stalwarts of Tamil Sangam wrote interpretation for the work of Lord SivA. To resolve the dispute among them about whose work was the best, Murugan came to Madhurai as a mute and dumb boy Rudrasanman, born in the lineage of Chettis, and listened to all the interpretations. Only when He heard the works of Nakkeerar, Kapilan and BaraNan, He showed so much awe with tears in His eyes that the poets realised which were the best ones and resolved their dispute - ThiruviLaiyAdal PurANam.

** Kollimalai is now known as Chathuragiri, situated near NAmakkal.

*** This refers to a statue of an enchantress erected in Kollimalai. It was erected by the celestial architect, Devathachchan, to ward off the demons who came to disrupt the penance of the sages. A mere look at the statue could inebriate the seer and kill him.
