......... Meaning .........

ponRalaip poykkum piRappaith thumpu aRuththittu: Birth, that is associated with death, ends up as a total myth; having severed that bondage,

inRu niRkap punthiyil satRum kuRikkaikku aRiyAmE: I have not been able to channel my thinking today to confine, even slightly, to any particular discipline;

pongi mukkic changai patRic chingi oththac changadaththup puN padaiththuk kanja maik kaN kodiyAr mEl: (instead,) I have been flirting with whores who fume and boil in rage, make several attempts (to snare me), who, with suspicion, make my mind sore with their venomous acts and entice me with their lotus-like eyes smeared with black paint;

thunRum icchaip paNdanukkup paNpu aLiththuc champramiththu: I am like a pot filled with lust for them, chasing these whores in close quarters; will You inculcate virtuous thought in me, making me great?

thumpi patchikkum prasac cheyppathi meethE thoNdu pattuth theNdanittu: Leading me to serve in the place, VayalUr, where flowers with honey-filled pollens abound imbibed by beetles,

kaNdu patRath thaNdai varkkath thunga raththap pangayaththaith tharuvAyE: kindly grant me the vision of Your immaculate and reddish lotus-feet, adorned with thandai and other anklets, so that I could hold on to them as my refuge!

kunRu eduththup panthadiththuk kaN sivaththuc changariththuk koNdal oththittu inthiranukku ic chura lOkA: You tossed the Mount Krouncha as if it were a ball and destroyed it in rage with fiery eyes; and You gave his land as a boon to IndrA in a gesture of compassion like the cloud (that showers without expecting anything in return), Oh Lord of the celestials!

kompu kuththic champu azhuththith thiN thalaththil thaNdu veRpaik koNdu amukkic chaNdai ittup porum vEzham: Piercing with his tusks and pressing with the sharp tips that were like reeds, he fought on this solid earth holding his mace and the mountain together; he was KayAsuran, the elephant-demon*;

senRu uriththuc chuntharikku accham thavirththuk kaN sukiththuc chinthaiyuL patRu inRi niththa(m) kaLi kUrum: He went after that demon, attacked him and peeled off his hide; He removed the fear of the beautiful Goddess PArvathi; with absolute detachment He was able to show happiness in His eyes each and every day;

seNpakaththuc champuvukkuth thom pathaththup paNpu uraiththu: He is Lord SivA who wears the sheNbaga (champak) flowers; to that SivA You, as His Master, explained the significance of the term "thvam" (in the ManthrA "thathvamasi") in detail,

chenguvattil thangu chokkap perumALE.: and took Your seat in ThiruchchengkOdu**, Oh Handsome and Great One!

* By virtue of the boon he obtained from Brahma, the elephant-demon KayAsuran became mighty aggressive and tortured all the celestials. Lord SivA knocked down the demon and peeled away his hide to the great relief of DEvi PArvathi, and wore that skin as a shawl.

** ThiruchchengkOdu is in SAlem District of Tamil NAdu, 6 miles away from Sankaridurgam railway station. As the mount is reddish in colour, the name ThiruchchengkOdu -Red Hill- was given.

In Kandhar AlangkAram, Saint AruNagirinAthar sings about ChenkOdan (Murugan): to see His beauty, he wishes BrahmA, the Creator, had blessed him with 4,000 eyes!
