Meaning ......... ilAbamil polAvurai solAmana thapOdhanar iyAvarum: The sages are so pious that they never say anything futile or hurtful; irAvupagal adiyEnai: they have been saying these things about me day and night. irAgamum vinOdhamum ulObamudan mOhamum: "He does not have desires, does not indulge in pranks, has no miserliness and lust; ilAniva numA purushan ena Eya: he is indeed a great man". In order that I qualify for these words, salAbava malAkara saseedhara vidhAraNa: Oh upright one, who wears the spotless crescent moon(*1), and the most compassionate, sadhAsiva mayEsura: Oh SadhAsivA, Oh MahEswarA (Lord of all Gods), sakalalOka sarAsara viyApaga parApara: You pervade everything in the world, both moving and stationary, Oh the Supreme Being, manOlaya samAdhi anubUthipeRa ninaivAyE: please think in terms of blessing me with the sublime experience of NirvAna, where the thought process ceases and the mind shrinks. nilAviri nilAmadhi: The crescent moon that spreads moonlight everywhere, nilAdha anila asana niyAya paripAla ara: the serpent (AdhisEshan) who feeds on the wind that stops nowhere and who is known to uphold justice(*2), nadhisUdi: and the river Ganga are worn in SivA's tresses; nisAchara kulAdhi pathi rAvaNa buyArida: RAvanA, who is the Leader of the asura dynasty, once suffered immense pain in his shoulders, which was inflicted by SivA(*3); nirAmaya sarOruharan aruLbAlA: He is free from any disease; He is seated on the lotus; that SivA delivered You as His child! vil Asukam valArenum ulAsa idha Agava viyAdhargaL: These hunters are experts in fighting with their bows and arrows and delight in doing so; vinOdhamagaL maNavALA: their wonderful girl, VaLLi has You as her consort! virAvu vayalArpuri sirAmalai pirAnmalai: The famous places like VayalUr, ThirisirApalli, PirAnmalai (known as KodungkundRam) virAli malai meedhil uRai perumALE.: and VirAlimalai(*4) are Your favourite abodes, Oh Great One! |
(*1) As Murugan is the alter-ego of SivA, the poet does not distingush between the two. (*2) AdhisEshan is worn as an ornament in the tresses of SivA. He is the King of all serpents. He is known to uphold justice. Once, AdhisEshan became so egoistic about his sense of justice that Lord SivA decided to punish him by pulling him from His tresses and throwing him on earth when his head broke into a thousand pieces. Repentant AdhisEshan pleaded for forgiveness and prayed to SivA whereupon AdhisEshan was blessed with a thousand hoods. (*3) RAvaNA became so arrogant that he decided to lift Mount KailAsh along with SivA and PArvathi. To punish his arrogance, SivA pressed His little toe on the mountain whose entire weight fell on the shoulders of RAvanA. He began to cry in pain. RAvaNA means one who cries. (*4) KOnAdu is the region west of Mount eRumbeesar, east of MathiRkarai, south of River KAvEri and north of PirAnmalai; VirAlimalai is in this area situated 20 miles from Tiruchi on the route to Madhurai, near MaNappARai. |
