......... Meaning .........

seerAna kOlakAla nava maNi mAl apishEka pAra veku vitha thEvAthi thEvar sEvai seyu muka malar ARum: The six hallowed faces in an orderly row, adorned by lofty crowns in which brilliant gemstones of nine kinds are embedded, and which faces are worshipped by all celestials and their lords;

seerAdu veera mAthu maruviya eerARu thOLum: the twelve shoulders embraced by the illustrious Veera Lakshmi (Goddess of Valour);

neeLum vari aLi seerAkam Othum neepa parimaLa iru thALum: the two sacred feet, fragrant with kadappa flowers around which beetles with long stripes hum the melody of Sri Ragam;

ArAtha kAthal vEdar mada makaL jeemUutham Ur valAri mada makaL: VaLLi, the young daughter of the hunters, whose love for You is ceaseless, and DEvayAnai, the pretty daughter of IndrA who mounts the cloud as His vehicle,

AthAra pUthamAka valam idam uRai vAzhvum: standing by You on the right and left side as anchors for Your devotees symbolising Your Divine order;

ArAyum neethi vElum mayilum: Your Spear that dispenses justice after careful deliberation; Your Peacock;

meynj njAna apirAma thApa vadivamum: and Your exquisitely handsome and illustrious stature depicting True Knowledge; -

ApAthanEnum nALum ninaivathu peRa vENum: even though I am base and dishonourable, kindly bless me with the privilege of meditating upon (all of the above) each and every day!

Er Arum mAda kUda mathuraiyil meethu ERi mARi Adum iRaiyavar: Lord NadarAja, who danced on the silver stage in Madhurai, famous for its imposing terraces and halls, and who (once acceding to the request of Pandya King Rajeswaran) danced with His right foot up*, had composed a treatise on the aspects of mind (iraiyanAr akap poruL)

EzhEzhu pErkaL kURa varu poruL athikAram: which was interpreted by fortynine poet-stalwarts of the Madhurai Tamil Sangam; in order to explain the real meaning of the chapter on "resources",

eedAya Umar pOla vaNikaril UdAdi: You hailed from the apt lineage of Chettis** as a mute and dumb boy and grew up playfully

AlavAyil vithi seytha leelA visAra theera varathara gurunAthA: in ThiruvAlavAy (Madhurai) where You established the truth by way of a Divine sport, Oh Courageous One! You are the grantor of boons, Oh Great Master!

mun veeya ninaipavan eedERumARu kUr AzhiyAl bAnu maRaivu sey: Once, (in the battle of the Maha BhArathA) when Arjunan prepared to shed his life (by jumping into fire), He saved him by concealing the sun with His sharp disc;

gOpAlarAya nEyam uLa thiru marukOnE: He is the Lord of the cowherds, Krishnan, and You are His dear nephew!

kOdAmal AravAra alai eRi kAvEri ARu pAyum vayaliyil: This river KAvEri tosses its noisy waves unswervingly in a rhythm; on its banks is the town VayalUr which is Your abode.

kOnAdu chUzh virAli malai uRai perumALE.: You are also seated in VirAlimalai which is in the region of KOnAdu***, Oh Great One!

* Once, Pandya King Rajasekaran, looking at the continuous dancing by Lord NadarAjA with His left foot up, feared that it must be painful to the Lord and requested Him to dance with His right foot up. Acceding to the king's request, the Lord in Madhurai danced, changing His dancing foot from the left to the right - ThiruviLaiyAdal PurANam.

** 49 poet-stalwarts of Madhurai Tamil Sangam wrote interpretation for the work of Lord SivA. To resolve the dispute among them about whose work was the best, Murugan came to Madhurai as a mute and dumb boy Rudrasanman, born in the lineage of Chettis, and listened to all the interpretations. Only when He heard the works of Nakkeeran, Kapilan and BaraNan, He showed so much awe with tears in His eyes that the poets realised which were the best ones and resolved their dispute - ThiruviLaiyAdal PurANam.

*** KOnAdu is the region west of Mount eRumbeesar, east of MathiRkarai, south of River KAvEri and north of PirAnmalai; VirAlimalai is in this area situated 20 miles from Tiruchi on the route to Madhurai, near MaNappARai.
