......... Meaning .........

al asal adaintha vil adal anangan alli malar ampu thanai Eva: Because of the arrow of lily flower shot by Manmathan (God of Love) who arrived at dusk with his triumphant bow,

piLLai mathi aLLi eri sintha thenRal aiyam athu kiNda: because of the fiery rays emitted by the crescent moon, because of the doubt raised by the southerly breeze whether the Lord would arrive (due to the fiery rays),

aNaiyUdE sollum aravintha valli thani ninRu: and because of the scandal (spread by the folks in the town), this girl, looking like Lakshmi on the lotus, feeling lonely on the bed,

thollai vinai enRu muniyAthE: should not hate herself attributing her misery to her past deeds;

thuyya vari vaNdu seyya mathu uNdu thuLLiya kadampu tharavENum: for that, You must give her Your garland of kadappa flowers around which beetles, with pure rays on their body, jump about after imbibing the reddish honey!

kal asala mangai ellaiyil virintha kalvi karai kaNda pulavOnE: You are the poet adjudged by PArvathi, Daughter of Mount HimavAn, to be the best* in a boundless competition among erudite poets, Oh Lord!

kaL ozhuku konRai vaLLal thozha anRu kallal aRa onRai aruLvOnE: He is the great charitable Lord SivA, with honey-dripping kondRai (Indian laburnum) flower in His matted hair; when He prostrated at Your feet the other day, You preached to Him most clearly the matchless PraNava ManthrA!

val asurar anja nalla surar vinja vallamai therintha mayil veerA: The powerful demons ran away scared and the virtuous celestials were elated when You showed Your prowess, Oh valorous Lord on the Peacock!

vaLLi padarkinRa vaLLi malai senRu vaLLiyai maNantha perumALE.: You went up to Mount VaLLimalai** where the vaLLi creepers abound and wedded the damsel VaLLi over there, Oh Great One!

* Once there was a competition among AvvaiyAr, IndrA, Saraswathi and Agasthya as to who should get the prime honour for outstanding knowledge. As all of them considered themselves unworthy of that honour, the celestials and the sages approached DEvi PArvathi for judgement. She smiled and declared that She Herself was no more than the peel of the fruit and that Lord Murugan, who is the fruit within Her, was the only one worthy of that honour - Kandha PurANam.

** VaLLimalai is in North Arcot District 12 miles southeast of Roya VelUr, slightly north of Thiruvallam. This is the hill where VaLLi was found as a baby by the tribe of hunters.

This song is based on the Nayaka-Nayaki Bhavam, where the poet, assuming the heroine's mother's role, expresses the pang of separation from the hero, Murugan.
The God of Love Manmathan, His flowery arrows, the moonlight, the southerly breeze and the scandal-mongering people are a few of the things that aggravate the agony of separation.
