......... Meaning .........

(The first 15 lines of the song describe the hair and the forehead of women).

necchup picchip putpath thatpak kacchik kacchutRu aRal mEvi: Their hair is cool like the jasmine flowers containing honey-drops; it is tied up exquisitely and looks like black sand;

neRiththu veRiththu iruttai veruttiya niraitharu marumalar serukidu parimaLa niRaiyuRai mathukara nedithu Adi: it is curly and filled with aroma; its black shade puts darkness to shame; it is adorned with fragrant flowers neatly arranged in a row; happy beetles, thriving in the sweet scent of flowers, swarm around it;

ni(c)chikku acchap pattuc chikkatRu oppukku oppukku uyarvAki neLiththa suLiththa vizhaikkuL azhaiththu: it scares away the night (with its darkness); it is snarl-free, sitting pretty in matchless style on a high pedestal; its curls are wavy; it is highly provocative and very inviting;

mai nikarena akaruvum ukupukai thokumiku nikazh puzhuku ozhukiya kuzhanmElum: its colour is like the black pigment painted on the eyes; the hair of these women is filled with the pleasant smell of musk, intermingled with the rich scented smoke from ignited akil (incence);

vachrap pacchaip pottu itta pottukkuL sekkarp prapai pOla vaLaiththa thazhaiththa piRaikkum uRaikkum: their forehead shines with the green decorative mark that sticks like glue; that dot contains a red, curvy and rich arc looking like the crescent of the moon;

manmathachilai athuvena makapathi thanuvena mathi thilathamum vathi nuthan mElum: that arc on the forehead looks like the bow of Manmathan (God of Love) and the rain-bow commanded by Lord IndrA; by that hair, the forehead,

macchacc checchaic chithrac chathrap pon pakkaththu icchaiyanAki: and by all the birth-marks over the body, as well as by the reddish and wonderful sides of their figure, I became enthralled;

manaththin anaiththum aNaiththa thuNaip pathamalar alathu ilainilai enamozhi thazhiya mey vazhipadal ozhivanai aruLvAyE: although I am negligent of the true worship upheld by the scriptures declaring that there is no permanent solace other than Your lotus feet and that those hallowed feet alone can grasp and deliver all the wishes of the mind, kindly bless me!

nacchuth thuc choppicchuk kuttaththuL thakka attaththu asikANa nadaththi: When poison was consumed (by Bheeman), his glow was unaffected by the poison; when sharp swords were kept hidden in a pond to snare him, the tips of the swords were revealed (by KrishnA to Bheeman)*;

vidaththai yudaiththa padaththinil nada(m)navil kadalidai adupadai thodumukil: shattering the poison on its head, He danced gracefully on the hood of the serpent (KALingan); He is Lord VishNu, of the hue of dark cloud, who (as RAmA) wielded the deadly arrow on the seas;

nakaimuka thiruvuRai maNimArpan naththaththaic chakraththaip pathmaththaik kaip patRip poru mAyan: on His hallowed chest, the ever-smiling Goddess Lakshmi is concorporate; He holds the conch-shell and the disc in His lotus-hands while fighting; He is the mystic Lord VishNu;

narikkum arikkum erikkum viruppuRa nasitharu nisisarar uda kudal idal seytha narakari oru thiru marukOnE: He threw the rotten intestines of the demons to the hungry jackals, swords and fire to devour; He is the enemy of the demon NarakA, and You are the nephew of that Lord VishNu and His matchless consort, Lakshmi, Oh Lord!

kacchuth thacchup poRkattu ittup pattukku utpattu amuthu Alum karuppi(n) rasaththum uruccheythu vaicchidu: Her bosom is daintily covered by the knotted blouse made of silk; its movement is like that of the nectar-filled pot; it looks as though it is moulded from the juice of sugar-cane;

kanathana parimaLa muzhuku pa(n)niru puya kanaka thi(v)viya maNi aNimArpA: You simply drown in that fragrant and huge bosom of VaLLi, hugging her with Your twelve shoulders! Your chest is adorned with precious gems made of gold, Oh Lord!

kaic chaththikkuk keRchiththu okkap patchikkak kotta asurAthi kaRuththa niRaththa arakkar kulaththodu kaRuviya siRiyava: Feeding the roaring spear that is prominently held in Your hand, You fiercely destroyed SUran, the leader of the demons, who came with his clan of black-complexioned demons amidst the loud beating of drums, Oh Young Lord!

kadavaikaL pudaipadu kadavada malaiyuRai perumALE.: On both sides of the path-way leading to this mountain, forests abound; You are seated in that Mount ThiruvEngkadam, Oh Great One!

* On the river-bed, DhuriyOdhanan had hidden sharp swords to snare Bheeman whom he playfully challenged to dive into the river.
Lord KrishnA saved Bheeman from the swords by pointing out the area of danger by sending out a swarm of beetles.
