......... Meaning .........

thaRaiyin mAnuda rAsaiyi nAlmadal ezhudhu mAlaruL mAdhargaL: In this world, these whores are capable of provoking so much passion in men that, out of lust, they even resort to doodling on palm leaves*;

thOdhaga sarasar mAmala rOdhiyi nAliru kongaiyAlun: these women are treacherous in their teasing love-play; they display their beautiful hair adorned with pretty flowers and their bosom;

thaLarmi nEr idaiyAl udaiyAl nadai azhaginAl mozhiyAl vizhiyAl: their slender waists like the flashes of lightning; their delicate clothings; their gaits with a lilt; their sweet talk and beautiful eyes;

maruL savalai nAy adiyEn miga vAdi mayangalAmO: - all these have left me, the lowly dog, dazed like a little baby; should I be so inebriated?

paRavai Anamey gnAnikaL mOnikaL: Those nomadic sages who move around from place to place like birds and those who have realised through silence

aNugoNA vagai needumi rAsiya: are incapable of approaching this mystery that is conspicuously detached

pavana pUraga vEgika mAgiya vindhunAdham: and that which manifests in the sound of Siva-Sakthi union achievable by holding the inhaled air (pUragam)** through breath-control methods (PrANAyAmam);

pagaro NAdhadhu sEravo NAdhadhu ninaiyo NAdhadhu vAna: that which is undescribable, unattainable and unimaginable;

dhayApara pathiya dhAna samAdhi manOlayam vandhuthArAy: that which is full of compassion, primordial and capable of holding my mind in a state of samAdhi (which is at the peak of the kundalini zones, namely sahasrAra)***; kindly come and deliver that bliss to me!

siRai vidAdha nisAcharar sEnaigaL madiya neela kalApama dhERiya thiRal vinOdha samELa dhayApara: You mounted the blue peacock and fought with the demons who were holding the celestials in prison and killed their entire armies, Oh Wonderful, Powerful and Compassionate One!

amburAsith thiraigal pOlalai mOdhiya seethaLa kudaga kAviri: This cool river KAvEri coming from the Coorg (Kudagu) region has large waves thumping like the sea waves;

neeLalai sUdiya thirisi rAmalai mEluRai veera: You are the valorous One residing in ThirisirAmalai lashed by those waves!

kuRinjivAzhum maRavar nAyaka Adhi vinAyagar iLaiya nAyaka kAviri nAyaka: You are the leader of all hunters living in mountainous regions (kuRinji); You are the younger brother of the primordial Lord GaNapathi; and You are the Lord of River KAvEri!

vadi vinAyaga Anaitha nAyaka engaLmAnin magizhu nAyaka dhEvargaL nAyaka: You are the Leader par excellence in handsomeness; You are the Consort of DEvayAnai; You are also the Consort of, and reveller in, our dear VaLLi, the deer-like damsel; You are the Master of all the celestials!

gavuri nAyaka nArguru nAyaka: You are the Master of Lord SivA, the Consort of Mother Gowri;

vadiva dhAmalai yAvaiyu mEviya thambirAnE.: You relish in setting up Your abode in all beautiful mountains, Oh Great One!

* madal - is a type of palm leaf used as a canvas on which Murugan drew the descriptive picture of VaLLi and went alone to VaLLimalai. There, He chose a junction of four streets and stood staring at the picture day in and day out, oblivious of other peoples' comments and jeers. Ultimately, VaLLi's people were so moved by Murugan's devotion that they decided to formally give VaLLi in marriage to Murugan - according to Kandha PurANam.

  ** In this song, several Siva-yOgA principles are explained:

The inhaled air is known as 'pUragam' and the exhaled air is 'rechagam'. The retained air is 'kumbagam'. The oxygen that enters the body climbs up step by step through several centres, known as 'chakrAs' and ultimately reaches 'sahasrAram' or 'bindhuchakram' on the top of the skull. At that point of union, nectar flows from that chakrA and seeps through and soaks the six centres of the body and returns to the basic chakrA, 'mUlAthAram'. Three zones (namely, the sun zone, the moon zone and the fire zone) and ten nerves ('nAdis') govern the six centres; the principal nerves are 'susumna', 'idaikala' and 'pingala'.

idakala: one of the ten 'nAdis' (nerves), when inhalation takes place through the left nostril;
pingala: one of the ten 'nAdis' (nerves), when inhalation takes place through the right nostril;
susumna: one of the ten 'nAdis' (nerves), situated between the above two 'nadis', and running through the spinal chord covering all the six centres of 'kundalini'. ('idakala' and 'pingala' are entwined around 'susumna').

If breathing is controlled through a yOgA called 'praNAyAmA', the mind becomes tranquil.

    *** The names of the chakrA centres, the deities, the elements, the zones of the body
    where they are located, the shape of the chakrAs, the description of the flowers in the
    chakrAs, the letters of the manthrA governing them and the temple-towns representing
    them are given in the following chart:
