......... Meaning .........

padarbuviyin meedhu meeRi vanjargaL: Approaching treacherous misers in this vast earth,

viyaninurai bAnu vAyvi yandhurai: people praise them saying "Oh, Great Sun!", (seeking some charity);

pazhudhilperu seela nUlga Lumtheri sanga pAdal: They have studied blemishless great works about ethics and noteworthy Sangam literature;

panuval kadhai kAvyamAme NeNkalai: historic treatises, stories, epics and all the sixtyfour arts;

thiruvaLuva dhEvar vAymai engiRa pazhamozhiyay OdhiyE uNarndhu: the ancient work of ThiruvaLLuvar entitled "Eternal Truth" (ThirukkuRaL) has been chanted and assimilated by them;

pal sandhamAlai madalbaraNi kOvai yAr kalambaga: several rhythmic garlands of compositions such as madal, baraNi, kOvaiyAr, kalambagam etc.,

mudhaluLadhu kOdi kOL prabandhamum: numbering millions, all those minor epics;

vagai vagaiyil Asu sEr perungkavi chandavAyu madhurakavi rAja nAn: and diverse literatures have been mastered by them; they declare themselves as "the Great Bard", "Poetic Hurricane" and "the Emperor of sweet poetry", and so on.

en veNkudai virudhukodi thALa mELa thaNdigai varisaiyodulAvu: They roam about pompously with white umbrellas, medallions, cymbals, percussion instruments and palanquins;

mAl agandhai tha virndhidAdhO: Will the delusory and ornate display of their arrogance ever come to an end?

adalporudhu pUsalE viLaindhida: When Vishnu fought with the demon, Jalandharasuran, there was a lot of tumult;

edhirporavo NAma lEga: being unable to fight the demon face to face, Vishnu retreated from the battlefield

sankara arahara sivA mahAdhev endruni andrusEviththu: and prayed meditating on Lord SivA saying "Oh Sankara, HaraharA, SivA and MahadevA!"

avanivegu kAla mAy vaNangiyuL urugi: Vishnu stayed for many days on this earth and prostrated before Lord SivA with utmost devotion;

vegu pAsa kOsa samprama adhibela katOra mA jalandharan nondhuveezha udalthadiyum Azhi thAvena: He prayed for the grant of a disc that could destroy the rope of bondage and shield of the strong, mighty and malicious demon, Jalandharan and that could knock him down by piercing his body.

ambuya malargaLdhasa nURu thALi dum pagal: Vishnu offered a thousand lotus flowers at the feet of SivA daily;

orumalari lAdhu kOva Nindhidu sengaNmAlukku: one day, as the flowers fell short by one, (to make up for that) Vishnu, the lotus-eyed Lord, offered His own eye*;

udhaviyama gEsar bAla: Lord SivA presented to that Vishnu the great disc (Sudharsana ChakrA), and You are the child of that SivA!

indhiran magaLaimaNa mEvi: You wedded DEvayAnai, the daughter of IndrA,

veeRu sendhilil uriya adi yEnai ALa vandharuL thambirAnE.: and came to this famous place, ThiruchchendhUr, to take charge of me, having a special entitlement with You, Oh Great One!

* The powerful demon, Jalandharan, conquered all the celestials, including Vishnu, and decided to proceed to Mount KailAsh to challenge Lord SivA. SivA took the disguise of a brahmin and set up a disc daring Jalandharan to cross it before he could enter KailAsh. Jalandharan tried to cross the disc and was killed. Seeking that disc, Vishnu ardently prayed at Thiruveezhimizhalai offering 1000 lotus flowers every day to SivA. One day, the total count of flowers fell short by one, and Vishnu plucked His own lotus-eye and offered it to SivA. In appreciation of His devotion, SivA presented the disc (Sudharsana ChakrA) to Vishnu - Thiruveezhimizhalai PurANam.
